Today in Postal History
Chile to Argentina
November 13, 1929
This airmail cover was sent from Valparaiso
across the
Andes to Buenos Aires.
The eight stamps were cancelled with six strikes of the
CORREO AEREO | VALPARAISO CDS with a circled star.
There is a nice bilingual red airmail etiquette
on the
front.
The cover backflap was imprinted with the seal of
'The Pacific Steam Navigation Co. Incorporated by Royal Charter 1840.'
The cover was addressed to the agent of the company in Buenos Aires.
The Valparaiso Passenger Department was the
sender.
They stamped the back with an oval origination stamp dated November 13.
Does anyone have an explanation for the boxed
12C2 on
the back?
The cover is franked with 1928 airmail overprints:
three 20c brown orange and black Manuel Bulnes,
two 50c deep green and black Federico Errázuriz Zanartu,
and one 1p green and black Aníbal Pinto (Scott C15, C19, and
C10).
Franking was completed with two 1929 25c blue and black Manuel Montt
(Scott 167).
