These two covers are First Day Covers for the souvenir
sheets
issued
for the Johannesburg International Philatelic Exhibition of 1936.
The covers were further uprated to provide for the registered airmail
rate.
The circular date stamp is the exhibition cancel and reads:
JOHANNESBURG INTERNATIONAL PHILATELIC EXHIBITION.
The souvenir sheets were made by overprinting booklet panes
with
marginal ads.
The 1936 ½p springbok green and gray pane of six (Scott 72)
and the 1936 1p carmine and gray van Riebeek's ship Drommedaris (Scott
73)
were overprinted
JIPEX
1936
In addition, the ½p sheet had a bilingual pair of the
1936
4p native kraal brown (Scott 41) - total 11p;
and the 1p sheet had an English single of the same stamp added (Scott
41a)
- total 10p.
At least one cover is improperly rated.
Note that the exhibition lasted from November 2 through November 14.
