Transvaal to England
November 2, 1903
This picture postcard was sent from Pretoria in the
aftermath of the Boer War.
It has a clear Pretoria CDS.
It's a shame we don't have a scan of the other
side.
Pretoria
was in southern Transvaal about 70 km north of Johannesburg.
Pretoria is now one of two capitals of South Africa, sharing with Cape
town.
Its destination was near Bradford in Yorkshire.*
Bradford
is west of Leeds and northeast of Manchester.
At the time of the Boer War Bradford was a textile manufacturing center.
The cover is franked with a 1902 1d. scarlet King Edward VII from Great Britain (SG 219).
*Thanks to Dave Parsons for catching the 'near'
rather
than north in the address.
