Uruquay to Germany
October 24, 1900
This registered cover was mailed from Durazno
about 175 km north of Montevideo.
The Durazno CDS has CORREOS TELEGS which I believe
translates as post office and telegraphs.
Registration was indicated by the boxed
RECOMANDADA handstamp.
In addition, a boxed AR was added for Aviso de Recepcion for
advice (or acknowledgement) of receipt to obtain delivery confirmation.
I believe the manuscript serial No. 1005 in the upper right corner was
added on arrival in Germany.
The cover's first transit mark was in Montevideo
where it arrived on October 25.
The Montevideo CDS has OFICINA DE ????.
Can anyone supply the correct wording and a translation?
The cover arrived at its destination of Halle an der Saale
on November 20.
Halle on the Saale river is about 35 km northwest of Leipzig.
The ANKUNFT CDS denoted its arrival.
On the cover's arrival in Germany it received a
straight
line RÜCKSCHEIN handstamp.
This is the German word for acknowledgement of receipt.*
The cover was franked with a 1900 20c light blue
numeral (Scott 88)
and
an 1899 5c greenish blue locomotive (Scott 114).
*Thanks to Knud-Erik Andersen for the translation
of this German
postal
marking.
