Today in Postal History
This registered airmail was sent by a bank from Basrah in
southern Iraq.
There are two Basrah CDS.
Registration was accomplished by adding a preprinted
registry
label and the blue cross.
A boxed REGISTERED was also applied.
The carrier requested was Imperial Airways.
Imperial Airways had pioneered air service into the Middle East in 1929.
The destination was a bank in Holt, Norfolk
which is about 30 km
northwest of Norwich and about 5 km from the North Sea coast.
There was no scan of the reverse so we cannot see the
expected transit/receiving marks.
The cover was franked with a pair of 4f purple brown
and a single 40f dark violet
from the King Ghazi issue of 1934-38 (Scott 64 and 72).
