Today in Postal History
This registered cover was sent by
The Yokohama Specie Bank, Ltd. in Tokio to Switzerland.
It is stamped by the sender with a large REGISTERED handstamp
and a preprinted Tokio registry label was added at the post office.*
Note also the English corner card.
The cover was cancelled with a single Tokio western foreign
mail CDS.
The English backstamp indicates the sender was
the Inward Bill Department of the Tokio Branch.
The destination was Basel where it was given a BRIEFTRAGER
(letter carrier) backstamp on its arrival on September 11.*
The cover is franked with a pair of 1925 rotary press
13 sen bister brown Chrysanthemums (Scott 138a).
The stamps are perfins although the design is not legible.
*Thanks to Mike Lau for reminding me to identify
the source of the REGISTERED handstamp.
Thanks, too, to Bjorn Munch for correcting my interpretation of the
Basel backstamp.
