Today in Postal History
This souvenir card was posted aboard a cruise ship sailing
north of the Arctic Circle as noted by the circular imprint at the
left.
North Cape (Nordkapp) is in Norway.*
The route probably included Murmansk.
The M.S.
Kungsholm was built by Blohm and Voss in Hamburg in 1928.
The 21,250 ton vessel carried 1,544 passengers.
It was operated by the Swedish American Lines until 1941
when it was sold to the United States Government, probably for use in
World War II.
The card was addressed to Newark, New Jersey.
Newark is across the Hudson River from New York City.
It was postmarked Göteborg - NewYork - SJP 7.*
The card was cancelled aboard the ship and postmarked with a CDS
indicating the ship's routemark.
It is not certain whether the ship was west bound or east bound.
There is no evidence of a transit mark for the first shore post office
to handlt the card.
The card is franked with 1936 20 öre light blue old
sailing packet coil (Scott 254).
*Thanks to Bjorn Munch for his input regarding the route
and getting me to examine the markings more closely.
