Today in Postal History
Cyprus to Italy
April 6, 1890
This cover was sent from Larnaca on the
southeast side of Cyprus to Florence, Italy.
It has both a Larnaca CDS and three strikes of the '942' numeral cancel.
It is franked with CYPRUS overprints of three British stamps
of the period.
There is one ½d. rose and two 1d. reds from 1880 (SG 1 and 2).
The scan is not adequate to determine plating or positions.
SG suggests premiums for these stamps on cover of from 10x and from
50x, respectively.
Since these are uncommon stamps in their own right,
this cover would be a high point in a collection.
The route chosen was by sea via Brindisi on the heel
of the Italian boot and thence overland to Florence.
