Palestine to Denmark
February 18, 1961
When the state of Israel was created in 1948, the
Egyptians
occupied Gaza as the British Palestinian mandate ended.
By armistice terms signed February 24, 1949,
the territory remaining
under Egypt was reduced to the Gaza 'Strip.'
The area was occupied by Israeli troops from October 29, 1956, through
March 7, 1957.
The area came under the peacekeeping efforts of the 1st
United Nations Expeditionary Force.
This cover was sent by the UNEF Public
Information Officer
using only the
United Nations Emergency Force circular datestamp.
Its destination was Køge, Denmark.
Køge is on Køge Bugt (bay) about 35 km southwest of
Copenhagen.
Denmark provided support for UNEF so this may well be correspondence
home.
