Today in Postal History
Zanzibar to England
February 14,
1907
This picture post card was cancelled with two
squared circles for Zanzibar (now Tanzania).
The cover is franked with two 1 anna rose-red and one ½
anna green
from the 1904 Sultan's Monogram issue (SG 211 and 210).
This cover shows a return address for "Uncle
Charlie" on the H.M.S.
"Forte" of the Cape Squadron.
The "Forte" was an Astraea
Class Cruiser that kept busy off Africa during and after the Boer
War.
His message is the simplest traveler's missive to
home, "Hope you are all well and jolly."
The native sailing dhow must have been a common sight for a sailor in those waters.
