This cover was sent between banks.
The Bank of Bermuda, Limited,
in Hamilton
sent the contents
to the Merchants
Bank of Halifax, in Sackville,
New Brunswick.
Hamilton is the capital of Bermuda and a center for the tourist and
off-shore banking business which has made Bermuda noteworthy.
Sackville is at the head of the Bay of Fundy which has the
highest tides in the world.
This cover probably took advantage of the new 1d Imperial Penny Postage
Empire letter
rate first introduced between Canada and Great Britain on December 25,
1898.*
This rate was soon extended to other countries in the British Empire.
The cover is franked with a single 1d. aniline carmine Victoria issued
in 1889 (SG 24a).
There is a clear Hamilton CDS.
*Thanks to Bill Longley for this additional information in suggesting
that it went letter rate rather than printed matter rate.
He reminds us that Canada issued the Imperial Penny Postage stamp
(sometimes referred to as the first Christmas stamp) on December 7,
1898 .
